SANA’A – President of Yemen Mahdi al-Mashat has on Monday met with the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths. The meeting took place despite numerous Saudi attempts to block any diplomatic progress or representation of the National Salvation Government of Yemen.
During the meeting, also attended by parliament Speaker Yahya Ali al-Rahi and Prime Minister Abdulaziz bin Habtoor, they discussed the worsening humanitarian situation in Yemen as a result of continued Saudi aggression, especially in Hodeidah province. Furthermore, the meeting addressed the failure of the Geneva peace talks and plans for future rounds of negotiations in order to achieve peace.
The Geneva peace talks, mediated by the United Nations, failed last week due to Saudi sabotage that prevented the National Salvation Government from sending its delegation to Switzerland in order to attend. However, UN Envoy Martin Griffiths ensured that the Yemeni delegation was heard, first by meeting them in the Omani capital of Muscat, and now by meeting up with the President of Yemen himself.
